Creating a visionary document that looks forward is at the core of architectural consultant GHD’s mission in creating the draft proposal.
Principal planner John Ayers presented preliminary concepts to attendees at a Burnie Chamber of Commerce and Industry breakfast on Wednesday.
Mr Ayers said the idea was to create a plan that was functional and relevant, reinforces the idea of Burnie being a city of makers and stimulates investment and growth.
Under GHD’s proposal, the Burnie Centre would be divided into precincts – the Retail Core, West Beach, the Maritime Village and a Maker’s Quarter.
The Maritime Village would take part of the bottom floor of the Marine Terrace multi story carpark and build a plaza type retail space which would encourage development between the carpark and the centre and a place for pop-up spaces, functions and music.
The Maker’s Quarter, which would border King Street, would utilise bespoke art and encourage local artisans to establish workshops and retail spaces.
In regards to West Beach, Mr Ayers proposed removing vehicle spaces on the southern side of North Terrace in order to encourage on street dining, using the example of the Burnie Surf Life Saving Club as to what could be achieved.
Burnie City Council will release the document for public comment on Friday.
