A development application for the service station was accepted by the Northern Midlands Council at its meeting on Monday, allowing United to begin developing the site at 171 to 183 High Street.
The new development will include indoor and outdoor dining areas, four light vehicle and three heavy vehicle fuel stations, and more than 60 parking spots for vehicles, motorcycles and bicycles.
According to the development application, the service station will also aim to cater for heavy vehicles by offering longer parking spaces and a designated truck drivers’ indoor dining area.
“The development will cater to commercial (truck) vehicles in particular and the development has been designed to allow trucks to enter the site and manoeuvre around the site via the use of “thru lanes”,” the application reads.
Northern Midlands deputy mayor Richard Goss said while it was unclear when construction would begin, the project represented a “great development” for the town.
“It went through planning on Monday night at council meeting and it got the go ahead so the company now will look at developing that area to those plans which have been provided,” Cr Goss said.
“I haven't been given any timelines on when they intend to start building but the plans have been approved and that will go back to that organisation.”
Cr Goss said he expected the service station would provide another welcome food and fuel option for locals and visitors alike.
“It's quite a substantial parcel of land on the end of Campbell Town and it'll make the entrance into Campbell Town more inviting.
“As far as council is concerned it's a good development and it's another good thing for Campbell Town - it will create more employment, growth and investment in the Campbell Town area, and also it'll make it better for the travelling public from Hobart to Launceston.”
