Tasmania Police Sergeant Andrew Hanson said the aircraft was on an amatuer flight around the North East.
“As the pilots were coming into the Bridport Airport they were just doing a couple touch and runs...and on the third time they touched a flew off they had some engine difficulties at about 500 feet,” Sergeant Hanson said.
Australian Transport Safety Bureau would be investigating the incident.
The scene would be guarded overnight as per standard protocol.
UPDATE 5.10pm:
Two men on board a light aircraft which crashed at Bridport have sustained non-life threatening injuries.
One man was flown to Launceston General Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, the other man walked away from the incident.
Tasmania Police said both men were from Northern Tasmania.

A passenger on board a light aircraft which crashed at Bridport on Sunday afternoon was flown to hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter has arrived at the scene of a plane crash at Bridport.

Bridport resident Kerry Jensen said she noticed a white plane with a bright blue tail flying very close to her house.
“We could see it very clearly from our driveway and we knew it wasn’t right,” Ms Jensen said.
It was not uncommon to see a light aircraft flying above, but Ms Jensen said they were “usually a lot higher”.
“We heard lots and lots of fire engines and that is not the norm for Bridport, it is usually very quiet,” she said.
EARLIER:
A light aircraft has been involved in an crash at Bridport.
Tasmania Police said there were two passengers on board and they were being attended to by ambulance services.
Police said all emergency services were in attendance at the incident.
Tasmania Fire Service dispatched one heavy tanker and one light tanker.
State Emergency Service dispatched two rescue vehicles.
The cause of the accident is being investigated.
Tasmania Fire Service website said the incident was on Bridport Road, near Ada Street.
