The 12.10 (82) to 12.8 (80) victory bucked the trend of recent times of Devonport not being able to ‘’get the job done’’ despite showing great promise.
It was also their first win over Clarence in the current State League, and came a week after their one-point loss to Lauderdale.
After some early Devonport dominance, the Roos took over and led by 19 points in the second term.
But Devonport jumped on the rollercoaster to kick the next four to lead at half-time.
The high-pressure, high-intensity nature continued after the long-break, but the Pies broke free to be up by four goals at the last break.
This included a ‘’double goal’’, with the second coming due to abusive language from a Clarence defender to an umpire.
The Roos quickly reduced the margin to single figures, and then took the lead thanks to Trent Standen well into the final quarter.
But Beau Sharman and Phillip Crowden steadied to allow Devonport to take the win.
Sam Douglas was outstanding in the ruck and around the ground, while Brad Chard, as is his way, threw himself into every contest.
Beau Thop was important, while Mitch Thorp and Crowden kicked three goals each.
Jake Cox kicked four and Mitch Williamson three for Clarence, with Brady Jones and Matthew Drury strong contributors.
