The Little Athletics stars are will combine with 12 Hobart athletes to form team Tasmania for the 50th International Children’s Games in New Taipei City from July 11.
The team will be shadowed by three administrators: coach Wim Vaessen, manager Simon Bennett and team head Kaylene Knee.
Little Athletics Tasmania president Rhonda O’Sign said the games are an invaluable learning experience.
She said the state first took part in the games two years ago in Lake Macquarie.
“I liken the International Children’s Games to the Olympics,” O’Sign said.
“Apart from competition the athletes will be increasing their communication and literacy skills, being self reliant, increasing their confidence and building friendships with like-minded athletes from around the world.
“Our team is made up entirely of track and field athletes.”
The event is the largest multi-sport youth games in the world and are a member of the International Olympic Committee.
About 80 cities from 40 countries participate in sports including track and field, water polo, football, swimming, golf, BMX, sailing and gymnastics.
O’Sign Tasmanian athletes were not just selected on their athletic ability.
“Each athlete was asked to write to us about what they would gain from going to the International Children’s Games, so yes competition plays a big part of it, but so is the attitude of the young athletes going,” she said.
“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience a competition of this calibre.
“This is the first time that little athletes from Tasmania will compete in an overseas competition.
“Little Athletics thanks Launceston City Council for being the host city for the team.
“Our athletes and team personnel are very excited to have the opportunity to participate in this world-class event.”
The team will return to Australia on Thursday, July 21.
