And just like election promises, you never want to see how they became the final product.

The cakes and slices for the stalls are baked, and the trash and treasure is marked.

Tasmanians will swarm to 265 polling booths across the state, from schools to churches and community halls.

The venues become a sea of red, green and blue, as well as the propaganda of parties you’ve never heard of.

Party faithful have their “Vote 1” shirts ironed fresh, and the how-to-vote cards are ready to go.

Election day is finally here, and a buzz is in the air just like grand final day, but less fun.

We’ve made it through the marathon campaign that has dominated our television screens, our radios, our newspapers, our streets, and our Facebook accounts for months.

But despite the fanfare of election day, one in five Tasmanians will have already cast their vote.

At close of business on Thursday, 31,000 Tasmanians voted early.

And about 33,000 postal votes were sent out to those who planned on being away.

Hospital votes and other conditions add the total early vote count to about 75,000.

The early vote has increased by about 3 per cent since the last election, and will no doubt keep rising as election day transitions further into an election period.

No pressure, but Tasmania is being touted as the state to watch this election, especially in the Senate.

The new Senate voting rules will be tested for the first time, and nobody knows just how they will work in practice.

About 25 independents and minor parties are having a tilt at the Senate.

Some have just one cause, like animal welfare or legalising marijuana, others have a broader agenda like the Christian Democrats.

Some have no agenda, such as Flux, which plans to allow voters full control through a smartphone app.

Some won’t even be eligible, with Nick Xenophon Team candidate Nicky Cohen this week realising he was still a British citizen.

Part of the reason why Tasmania is the state to watch is because it can elect 12 Senators.

It’s staggering when you think that New South Wales has the same representation but more than 14 times our population.

How independent-turned-minor-party Senator Jacqui Lambie goes will gain national media attention, with suggestions she could be so popular she could even drag a second Senator over the line.

It will be a long wait to find out the Senate results, and experts predict it could even be a week.

The count will be slow, and it’s doubtful individual Senate candidates will have any idea how they fared on election night.

Labor Senator Lisa Singh and Liberal Senate Richard Colbeck, who were both done over by their own parties, will be hot ticket items to watch as well.

The North, or as it’s affectionately known by our Southern cousins, the Pork Barrelling Capital, is the exciting part of the state to be in.
