Heading into the coldest and darkest month of the year, the Launceston artist will exhibit a collection of 15 colourful and evocative landscapes to brighten up the walls of Deloraine’s Elemental Art Space during the month of July.
Inspired by locations around the state including Hollybank, Tinderbox, D'Entrecasteaux Channel and Weldborough, Crabtree’s work begins on site before reaching completion in the studio.
“I actually go there and sit down and sketch on canvas with a brush – it’s a bit like doing a watercolour, you just do a quick impression with very liquid paint and then if it's a mess you can just paint over it (later),” Crabtree said.
“I don’t have a fixed idea of what it should look like when I start out - I might just have a quick sketch to establish a few important points (such as) proportions.”
Crabtree said Tasmania’s unique landscapes and climate offered plenty to trigger creativity in artists.
“Tasmania has a unique quality of light, all of Australia does, but Tasmania particularly because it's nearer the pole so it has cleaner air.
“You get long summer evenings and short days in winter so it's more suitable for painting than the tropics.”
The exhibition will be open from 9am to 5pm daily until July 31.
