Heavy downpours hit Launceston and surrounding areas, causing havoc to thousands of residents and their homes and businesses more than two weeks ago.
“Through this very generous donation together we can actually reach out to people who have been affected,” St Vincent de Paul Tasmania CEO Merleen Cronin said.
“The funds will supply crucial support to families as they recover and begin rebuilding their lives.”
Mrs Cronin said many residents are in recovery mode.
“You can’t have an understanding of what effect it has until those floodwaters start to recede,” she said.
“It’s at that point where you start to look at whether you have enough insurance.”
Hawks star Grant Birchall was personally touched by the appeal having grown up in nearby Devonport.
“I have never seen anything like that in the area,” he said. “I just seen pictures on the news and I couldn’t believe how serious it was.”
“Being a Tassie boy, it’s a great initiative by the footy club,”
“It’s great to give something back.”
