Eighth-placed Riverside, who have won three of their past four matches, stunned United (third) in the opening half to lead 2-nil after 45 minutes.
Coach Alex Gaetani said it was a fantastic result.
“We were pretty happy with the way we played,” Gaetani said.
“We started well, which was really important and really put them on back foot from the first kick-off.
“We scored early and probably could have had a couple more goals… getting the second one before half-time was important.”
Gaetani said Olympic approached the second half with the same amount of gusto as Todd Mitchell joined Mccarragher on the scoreboard.
Both sides were reduced to 10 men following a heated exchanged between Mccarragher and Daniel Lewis late in the match before Aiden Rigby sent through a consolation goal for Ulverstone from a freekick.
“On our day we can beat the top sides as we’ve shown,” Gaetani said.
LAUNCESTON CITY were slightly better than Ulverstone at Mitsubishi Park, winning 2-1.
City coach Roger Mies said it was not the second-placed outfit’s best performance.
“We had a good patch of about 20 minutes where I was happy with the way we played and I guess the good thing is that we didn’t play particularly well for 90 minutes but we ground out a result,” he said.
“Ulverstone pressed hard in the second half for quite a long period, so I was happy to hang on.”
Noah Mies scored both Launceston goals.
In other matches, Somerset narrowly defeated Burnie 5-4 at Cardigan Street, while Devonport recorded a comfortable 5-nil home victory over Northern Rangers.
