An out-of-form Thunder faced the tough task to beat the former NBL club at The Cage on the back of average losses of 28 points in the past three consecutive games.
But a brilliant 27-16 last-quarter finish saw the visitors breeze to victory.
Trailing the Tigers by three points at the last change, North West went neck-and-neck until the final three minutes.
Holding their nerve, the Thunder scored a 9-1 last run to seal the satisfying win.
The Thunder had pushed out to a 23-17 lead at the end of the first term until the Tigers slowly drew their opponents back over the next two quarters.
Import Gary Johnson led the way with 25 points and 15 rebounds.
Garrett Jackson collected 22 points and Brad Simpson scored with 18 points to assist in the vital win.
