Member for Bass Andrew Nikolic announced on Sunday that $250,000 will be provided to the electorate to extend Launceston’s flood levees system.
The committment will be matched by the City of Launceston, giving a total investment of $500,000.
“When Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull visited Launceston to inspect flood damage two weeks ago he was very impressed with the work of the Launceston Flood Authority to protect our city,” Mr Nikolic said.
“During that visit I raised with the Prime Minister the urgent need for action to protect homes and businesses in unprotected areas of Newstead.
“Malcolm Turnbull immediately agreed, and I am very grateful for his quick response to my request. That enabled me to work with Council and the LFA to conclude this agreement.
“Launceston City Council and the LFA have confirmed that this new work on the Newstead component of the levees is an essential addition to Launceston’s flood protection.
“The latest floods approached a once-in-100-year event, so we can’t be complacent. This work needs to be completed as quickly as possible.”
