As the Tornadoes skipper sat sidelined for a prolonged 12 weeks, her left ankle cast in a moon boot, Wilson’s game in the absence of the inspirational point guard went from strength to strength.
“Obviously, we’ve had a big hole of not having Lauren being there throughout the start of the season,” Wilson admitted of Mansfield.
“I sort have had to play point guard, which hasn’t been my usual position.
“So, I have had to shoulder more responsibility shooting than previous years with Lauren there.
“I definitely felt like I had to step up a bit more.”
Stepping up doesn’t come much better than leading the SEABL women’s scoring.
Wilson has shot 330 points in 14 games – 33 points ahead of her nearest rival – to average 23.5 per game.
“In my game, I have always been a scorer, and that’s always been my mentality to go out and put points on the board for my team,” she said.
“I always think that has been the number-one factor in my game.”
In what has been Wilson’s breakout season – her third at the club – there was one area that she wanted to improve: nailing down three-pointers.
The 21-year-old has unbelievably gone beyond that.
Wilson has landed an amazing 54 three-pointers at nearly four a game.
What makes it more amazing is that Eilidh Simpson, from Sandringham, is the next best with just 30 from behind the arc.
“I sometimes wonder if it’s anything in particular this year, but when I go and shoot every day, it seems to be the technique and how fast I can get the shot off
“That sort of thing is always in the back of my mind to try and improve on.”
That says a lot considering she was named in last year’s SEABL team of the year.
The Torns vice-captain, from Murray Bridge in South Australia, admits the decision to cross to Launceston has been her happy place.
“It’s definitely been good for me here, to be more versatile and be able to play in the one position, as well and definitely add another string to my bow,” she said.
