Winterlicious is the city’s new festival, designed to welcome visitors and residents into the heart of town and celebrate all that is delicious about Tasmania in winter.
Cafes and restaurants, bars and coffee houses are all been excited to have the opportunity to showcase a wonderful array of Tasmanian gourmet produce as well as locally brewed boutique beer, ciders and whisky.
As Launceston’s Cityprom executive officer Vanessa Cahoon puts it: “Launceston is urging residents as well as visitors to embrace the cooler weather”.
“In collaboration, our local producers, restaurateurs, wine and cider-makers have created a real treat of a festival, and we’re inviting everyone to come into the city centre and celebrate rather than hibernate this month.”
Winterlicious opens on June 1 with a cocktail party and Chef’s Table dinner at the city’s newest tourist attraction – the Penny Royal – and other deliciously tempting events will be happening right through the month.
There are olive oil and cheese tastings on the menu. And why not grab your beanie and join the Beanie & bubbles al fresco party in Launceston’s newest “cool, retro” public space - Dicky White’s Lane off the Quadrant Mall? This event on Friday, June 10, starts at 5.30pm, and will feature “all things that bubble” - beer to cider and sparkling wine.
With Tasmanian-made whisky making world headlines for excellence in recent years, the canape party and whisky masterclass being offered at Pierre’s mid-month, has to be a diary must. Whisky expert Jane Overeem will host a sit-down tasting that will reveal the subtle differences between Tasmanian and Scottish whisky.
Vintage and Vines three nights later, is all about “glamming up in your best vintage attire, coats and gloves” and meeting friends in Dicky White’s Lane to swing and jive to the sound of local bands.
“Chefs, cider-makers to baristas and beer-makers have all been keen to be part of this new festival and many are cooking up a storm in celebration,” Ms Cahoon said.
“Winterlicious has all the ingredients – great food, wine, beers and music - to shake off the winter chill.
“We invite everyone to come along and enjoy.”
