The federal government announced last week it would contribute $2.8 million to the Legana Town Centre Structure Plan should it be re-elected, which would allow council to complete stage 1 and 2 of the project. 

The first two stages would see the development of a town boulevard between Brigalow Street and the Legana Recreation Ground, which would feature a 30-metre wide dual-carriageway and an 11-metre wide pedestrian walkway.

The boulevard would then continue through Legana Recreation Ground to connect with Henry Grove under stage three of the development.

The third stage will also see the Recreation Ground relocated to the current site of Montague's orchard, which will likely move outside the town centre in coming years to make way for more residential development. 

Mr Vos said the plan aimed to ensure the state's fastest growing suburb expanded in the most efficient way possible. 

“The whole intention of the Legana Structure Plan was to get ahead of the game,” Mr Vos said.

“Rather than subdivision being done by developers on an ad hoc basis, council have the opportunity to say “this is how we want Legana to develop over time and we want you as a developer to fit into our master plan”.”

Mr Vos said the proposed boulevard would be designed with an aim to encourage markets and stalls, and would likely provide exciting new opportunities for retailers and local producers into the future.

“On a nice summer’s day it could be that on a Sunday it closes down for a market, or an opportunity for coffee shops and food outlets to be able to retail out of there.

“We also might have the opportunity to shut it down and do a Tamar Valley produce market, with wines and cheeses and those sorts of things that are produced in the valley.” 

Should government funding be attained, work on design plans will likely kick off before the end of the year, with construction of the nine-month project likely to have commenced by mid-2017.
