Federal opposition higher education spokesman Kim Carr announced the commitment on Thursday which would help George Town Council carry out plans to assess a York Cove sediment removal feasibility study, link York Cove and the town centre through a redeveloped foreshore management plan, and develop a town investment and liveability prospectus.
Bass Labor candidate Ross Hart congratulated the council and community on identifying the projects as priorities for the region.
“On a number of levels this is really important for George Town,” Mr Hart said.
“Future employment in the region is going to be around those small businesses in the main street, better amenity on York Cove and the fantastic investment that Errol (Stewart) made many years ago in York Cove, so it's a positive future for George Town.”
George Town mayor Bridget Archer said the commitment was an exciting prospect for the region.
“Council put together a strategic priority project document prior to the federal election campaign and we provided that document to both candidates and we've also provided it to state government and state Labor as well,” Cr Archer said.
“The announcement... has picked up some of the strategic objectives in that document and we believe they'll contribute to long term sustainability, growth and employment creation in the area.”
Cr Archer said the projects were large-scale issues which required external funding from state or federal government to be realised.
“It's an election promise at this stage and it's conditional on the Labor party being elected.
“We have had good representation by the federal member for Bass so far during the term in office as well so we'll just wait and see.”
The federal government has contributed to a number of George Town projects over the past three years, including Innovation and Investment Funds grants, upgrades to mobile phone black spots, and repairs to the George Town Cricket Club.
