Cahill and Football Federation Australia have been at loggerheads in the past about getting the sport's most marketable name into the A-League, with the FFA saying they couldn't meet his demands and the player denying an offer was ever made.

But with Cahill's six-month contract at Hangzhou Greentown about to expire, Australia's all-time leading scorer at international level says he's still weighing up his options.

"I've never closed the door on the A-League. I think the good thing is I knew I was going to be a free [agent] going into the window in July, but it's obvious that there never has been any contact with me," Cahill said on Tuesday.

"And [regarding] the stories before and the statements made – I've never had a phone call. Other than that, I'm very close with the A-League chairmen and very close with a lot of people in the league but I can't press the button on anything.

"A lot of things are up in the air but I've just got to keep playing and that's the main thing for me. I'll look to see what happens for me, whether I stay in China or go somewhere else in the world. But overall, I think it's going to be left down to the big boss man of the league to decide what he wants to do."

Cahill revealed he's carrying a hamstring strain four days out from the first of two friendlies with Greece, but hopes he'll be fit to play on Saturday at ANZ Stadium.

He was a notable absentee in last weekend's two-one loss to England, although he has been released from his Chinese club for the two-match series in the international window.

"That was really hard to miss that game. I had a meeting with the president, weeks before, and asked him whether it would be possible to play in that game but, understandably, we were playing Shanghai SIPG and then Jiangsu – two massive games," he said.

"But the performance was amazing. We showed that we dominated the game in the first half. We definitely troubled England and it showed the philosophy of football that Ange [Postecoglou] wants to play is working and we're progressing week in, week out.

"I'm really proud of the boys, but more important than that is that it puts an emphasis on all the work we've been doing these last few years under Ange and the style of football we want to play. I was really impressed."

Cahill said he was coming into camp with a "slight hamstring" but said no matter how hurt he was, he'd "never miss a camp" and rated himself as a good chance to start.

"We've got some of the best staff, when it comes to physios, the best people to look after you and I'll always come in ready to play," he said. "I'm someone who doesn't like to miss games but I got through 90 minutes in the last game and the game before that. It's all about patching yourself up and hopefully I'll be available for selection in the next game."

While Hangzhou are currently just one point above last-placed Liaoning Whowin, Cahill says it's been a "constructive" period at his second Chinese club, where he's scored three goals in 11 games.

"I've learned a lot about the club and their young players and at the same time I didn't go into this blind," he said.

"I knew they want to beat relegation, which I'm quietly confident we will. It was a massive result [1-1] against Jiangsu. They're one of the top teams and one of the biggest spenders in the league and we outplayed them and Shanghai [SIPG]. It's just making sure that we can consistently do that for 95 minutes."

"I'm enjoying it, it's obviously a big mentorship role for me over there, as it is here with the Socceroos, so it's quite similar."

Cahill spent Tuesday afternoon at his junior club, Marrickville Red Devils, where he unveiled the first defibrillator installed in NSW as a result of the Heartbeat of Football program, a campaign driven by former TV presenter Andy Paschalidis.

"I played here as a kid in Mackey Park. I grew up in these areas, played for a lot of local clubs but this place here is where I scored my first header on that pitch over there," he said. "It's just nice I can be back in the country to launch [the program]."
