The popular Kiwi has agreed to be guest driver at a Tasmania versus Mainland drift battle featuring more than 20 visiting drivers.
Launceston driver Josh How said it will be a special moment to share the track with the Auckland-born 27-year-old who sits fifth in the V8 Supercar championship after top-six finishes in the last six series.
“It’s going to be pretty intense because he’s a very accomplished driver and driven more cars than I could imagine,” How said.
“Driving against a pro will be interesting and I’m sure he will give us a run for our money.
“I think he’s done a bit of drift racing in New Zealand and is keen to have a go at anything.
“He’s very familiar with Symmons Plains but I’m not sure he’s hit the hump sideways yet and it can be interesting doing that at 140km/h because you’re not sure if you’re going to end in the rock pit or come off on turn one.”
Van Gisbergen has fond memories of the 2.4-kilometre Tasmanian circuit having won race 4 of this year’s championship at the track in April.
He will be driving the S13 Nissan Silvia of Turners Beach driver Nathan Page who said he was “absolutely stoked” to have van Gisbergen on board.
“He's arguably the hottest property in Aussie motorsport this year and is a real driver’s driver,” Page said.
“Many people love his "drive anything, anywhere" attitude.
“We can't wait to see him get door on door down here at Symmons Plains. I’m sure he will give it a big crack.”
Reigning Drift Challenge Australia champion Tom Sabo headlines the mainland challenge making the trip to Tasmania.
Event organiser and DCA owner Luke Fink has a history of luring big-name overseas drivers to take part in the series and has recently secured Australia's first ever street drifting competition event.
Gates open at 9am on Saturday before three hours of practice. Qualifying sessions are scheduled from 1pm and competition resumes from 10.30am on Sunday.
Spectator entry is $15 on Saturday, $20 on Sunday.
