Bowden appeared to have a mortgage on this year’s award, polling in every Glenorchy game since round two including four best-on-ground performances.
After Whitford earned two best afield games in the Bombers’ first four matches, he has come again at Bowden with five further votes in his last three, including two over Launceston on Saturday.
Bowden leads the award on 18 votes, Whitford the next challenger on 11 votes.
Bombers defender Corey Nankervis polled three votes in the all-Launceston derby against the Blues, with one vote to teammate Jack Avent.
Launceston’s Joe Boyce has accepted a three-match ban down from four for striking Bomber Hayden Goss.
However, teammate Chris Savage has been reprimanded for striking William Loone.
