► NEWCASTLE, NSW: Critics of Newcastle University’s controversial $88 million maintenance contract with the company managing Australia’s offshore detention centres have slammed the university after Hunter sub-contractors were ordered to find an immediate 10 per cent pay cut, and given just weeks to find another cut of up to 10 per cent. ► HORSHAM, VIC: A mother whose son collapsed in front of her after taking illegal drugs has pleaded for help to stop the spread of ice and pills in the region. Fiona Pickering felt compelled to take a stand to help her son, 16, and other people in the Wimmera, particularly children, who are addicted to illegal drugs. Read more.
► QUEENSLAND: Sky News broadcaster Paul Murray says Barnaby Joyce was right in saying the snap suspension of live cattle exports to Indonesia five years ago by the former Labor government prompted an increase in boat people arriving in Australia. Read more.
► ORANGE, NSW: Fire and Rescue NSW's Orange brigade spent a number of hours battling Ophir's challenging terrain on Sunday to rescue a dog from a mine shaft. Gold prospectors in the Mullion Range State Conservation Area heard the dog barking on Sunday morning and when they visited a nearby property, they discovered the dog, named Duke, belonged to its residents. ► TOWNSVILLE, QLD: The two sides of the vegetation management debate were on display at a public hearing convened by the Parliamentary Agriculture and Environment Committee in Townsville. The committee rolled out a series of public hearings in northern and central Queensland to give people an opportunity to be questioned and to speak to submissions made on the Palaszczuk government’s proposed vegetation management law amendments. ► PORT MACQUARIE, NSW: If you saw a ball of fire in the sky on Sunday afternoon then you may have been treated to a rare astronomical event. Port Macquarie resident Hamish Johnson reported seeing a ‘ball of fire’ in the easterly sky around lunchtime. Several other skygazers saw the light and it turns out there is possibly a reasonable, but rare, explanation. Read more.

► Homeless protesters entering their third week camping at Melbourne's City Square say they will not move until housing is provided for all people sleeping rough across Melbourne. Read more.
► Protesters may be banned from masking their faces in the wake of an ugly clash between anti-fascist and far-right groups in Coburg on Saturday. Police Minister Lisa Neville will meet with Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton on Monday to discuss the response to the violence. Seven people were arrested and residents were scared to leave their houses as masked protesters fought outside a local primary school and library. Read more.
► Private investors would stand to profit by backing successful programs tackling social disadvantage under a proposed new scheme. Under the social impact bond program, investors would bear the financial risk for funding the projects. Read more.

May 30, 1971: Happy birthday to the snow queen herself! Idina Menzel, who voiced Elsa in the hit Disney movie Frozen, turns 45 today. Before Frozen, Menzel was known for her her work on Broadway (and that time John Travolta called her Adele Dazeem). Menzel won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical after originating the role of Elphaba in Wicked. Here she is singing one of the musical's major songs while on the Late Show with David Letterman:
The faces of Australia: Helen Jacobs
When Helene Jacobs began her nursing career almost 50 years ago, nurses made their own enemas from Sunlight soap and reusable glass syringes were the norm.
A lot has changed since those early years, but what remains the same is the enjoyment Helene gets from her contact with patients on a daily basis.
Helene, a registered nurse, finished her 50-year career at the Bathurst Private Hospital last week. Her last shift was on Friday afternoon. Read more.
