In a lawn where the grass has been replaced by moss  its   usually a sign of poor drainage or too  much shade.   To rectify  find a  solution for   the   poor drainage and prune back any overhanging branches.

 If your cabbages are healthy and green they  should  not need help in producing solid hearts  however, if they become pale and a little  stunted give a fortnightly feed of a soluble  fertiliser. 

 Harvest mature pumpkins when the  vines have died down  and store in a dry spot. If you find endive leaves  a little unpalatable you can reduce the bitterness by  blanching the leaves.  To do this place a terracotta pot upside down over the middle  of the plant  for seven to ten days before  picking.

Of all the fruit, the lemon  is probably the most useful.  They contain high levels of vitamin C; are very low in kilojoules; the fruits make wonderful jams, jellies, preserves, drinks, sauces and marinades; the juice  flavours food  and is a substitute for vinegar; the peel is candied and  the pulp  made into citric acid. There is room in all gardens, large or tiny for  this multitalented  tree.

Arum italicum ‘Pictum’ grows happily in deep shade where  the spear shaped marbled foliage puts on a  welcome show throughout the usually dormant winter.   

The    pale green and yellowish flowers  appear in summer and orange to red fruit in winter. Commonly  called lords and ladies  these woodland beauties are the   perfect foil for Helleborus.   Remove  the  orange seeds before they fully ripen or you will have these rhizomatous lilies  growing everywhere. 

Olive trees  can be planted as hedges or  trained  for  topiary and  espalier  use.  Some varieties  are suited to  grow in large pots.    These    hardy, cold and drought tolerant, evergreen trees    vary in size  so there would  be a variety to suit most  gardens.   

These Mediterranean plants have  attractive silvery,  grey-green leaves.  The   white flowers in spring  are followed by green or black fruit in summer.    Plant in a sunny, sheltered position in well drained,  neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Mulch during hot weather to keep moisture around the  shallow roots and   feed in early spring and late summer with Dynamic Lifter pellets for fruit and citrus trees.
