There are four sets of brothers – the Alexander’s, Chugg’s, Roach’s and Murfett’s – playing in the senior side this season.
Last Saturday marked a milestone for the Murfett family with three brothers all taking the field for the first time to continue their grandfather Barry and father Greg’s tradition.
Jake, 22, and Ben, 20, were joined by younger brother William,15, on debut against George Town.
“I have always wanted to play senior footy with my brothers but thought that it might be a few years off,” William said.
“I was really rapt when Ben (Chugg) selected me, but also a little nervous.”
William was named among the Tigers’ best players for using his pace on the wing to great effect in Longford’s victory.
When questioned on William’s game-day acknowledgement Jake replied: “he had to (be named in the bests), we were both too busy watching his back to be at our best”.
“Mum would have killed us if anything had happened to him,” Jake said.
“It was really great to have him in the side and we look forward to playing together for a long time.”
Greg was the senior runner during the game, while Barry looked on from the sidelines.
Both Greg and Barry have enjoyed long and successful careers with their beloved Tigers.
Longford have the bye this weekend.
