Kelly, 23, of Westbury, chopped his way to a rookie world record of 13.14 in the standing block, 1.5 seconds faster than the closest time.
The rookie championships involve the world's eight best under-25 axemen competing in four lumberjack disciplines: standing block, stock saw, underhand and single-buck saw. Kelly’s combined score earned a podium finish, in only his third major competition.
“It was an amazing feeling representing Australia and coming second against such a great field,” he said.
“I would have loved to come first but breaking the world record and setting a personal best is more than I could have asked for. A little bit more training in the sawing events and I'll be back even better next year."
Canadian Ben Cumberland won the event with Ben Kniceley (US) third.
