The party would supplement the $2.9 billion promised to the states and territories at the recent Council of Australian Governments meeting with an extra $1.1 billion to 2020.
Tasmania’s share in the COAG funding was about $59.5 million once scaled. The additional funding from the Greens would raise the state’s share to $83 million.
The party would also legislate for hospitals to be funded at 50 per cent of efficient growth in hospital costs. Its policies would be funded by removing the private health insurance rebate.
Tasmanian Greens senator Nick McKim said: “We know that both the Royal Hobart Hospital and Launceston General Hospital are bursting at the seams in terms of emergency admissions and elective surgery waiting lists.
“The workload on Tasmanian public hospitals will only grow in the years to come with our ageing population – now is the time to give them the resources (for the) future.”
The Coalition has come under fire for “cutting” $57 billion from hospitals funding after it axed a Labor-negotiated agreement between the federal government and states.
After COAG, the party agreed to continue to fund hospitals based on 45 per cent of growth in activity capped at 6.5 per cent each year, and provide the extra $2.9 billion.
Labor is yet to release its hospital funding policy and has not said it will restore its former funding agreement.
