I would ask the government to be proactive and recognise the dilemma here in Launceston.
It is just unacceptable that we have a sewerage plant that has had no major upgrade since 1993, we deserve better than that.
This is my solution, with the years of delay inevitable due to planning and design of the new submarines before they even become operational, would it not be reasonable to redirect $300 million of the $50 billion for the submarines to Launceston to allow this tertiary plant to be built?
The $50 billion is a massive amount of money that is committed to the project, but it is not going to be spent in one hit, it will be over many many years, so let us be innovators and make the money work much more effectively.
I am well aware of the reluctance of the Launceston City Council to stand up and ask for assistance, we quite wrongly endeavour to deflect the problem and the responsibility to Tas Water.
We need to recognise our part in all of this, I look forward to seeing the mayor making a positive statement and actually come out and make a definitive request to the government, both federal and state, to fix our dilemma.
Yes, it will be a courageous move, but it needs to happen.
Effectively, you are the leader of the council and l hope that you would see my suggestion in the vein in which it is intended.
Ald Ted Sands, Launceston.
