Having set new Tasmanian records and climbed to number one on the state’s all time lists for 5000-metre and 3000m steeplechase already this year, King Islander Stewart McSweyn could complete an impressive hat-trick on Sunday.
In the 3000m flat in the IAAF Golden Grand Prix at Kawasaki, McSweyn will target the best on record of 8.02.2, set by Randal Markey in the US almost exactly 40 years ago, and the official state record of 8.08.61 which is jointly held by Launceston’s James Hansen and North-West Coaster Kale Adams, both set earlier this year.
Also in action in Japan will be Hobart’s Hamish Peacock, still chasing the elusive Olympic qualifier of 83m in the javelin, Launceston’s Abbey de la Motte in the 800m and Hobart’s Sam Lind in the 4x400m relay.
Hobart’s Steph Stigwood is among 17 Australians due to contest the IAAF world race walking team championships in Rome.
