EARLIER: A man has allegedly escaped from police custody during a medical assessment at the Launceston General Hospital on Wednesday night.
Aaron Richard Thompson, 27, was escorted to the hospital after appearing in the magistrates court after hours on a number of charges.
After his medical assessment, police say that Mr Thompson broke free from the corrective services escort, taking off towards the central business district.
He was handcuffed at the time, and was wearing only blue track pants with no shoes or shirt.
Tasmania Police has appealed to the community to contact police on 131 444 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 if they have any information about Mr Thompson’s whereabouts.
He is not considered dangerous, but the public is asked not to approach him if sighted.
Tasmania Police further reminded the public that harbouring escapees is a crime and can be prosecuted against.
