The long-time lensman is one of several snappers already confirmed for this year's Evandale Spring Photography Exhibition, which will see a diverse collection of images decorate the Evandale Tourist and Information Centre walls from September 23 to October 7.

Organisers are currently calling for more photographers to take part in the exhibition, but are thrilled to have already snagged the services of Mr Thomas, whose fascination with photography began 45 years ago - almost by accident.

“I was in a library somewhere and I started flicking through photographs,” Mr Thomas said. 

“I came across a big folio of old black and white photographs by old photographers from the '30s and '40s and I was just so taken by them.

“I'd never really thought about it before but I just felt like I wanted to go outside and do that.”

Inspired by the discovery, Mr Thomas went on to pursue a photography career of his own, capturing images from across the globe as he combined a fervour for photography with a love for travelling.

The advent of digital photography has seen Mr Thomas increasingly experiment with colour over recent years but unlike a polaroid in the UV, his love for black and white is yet to fade.

“Even though I shoot digital in most cases I bring it back to the black and white because it's what I understand best.  

“The art of black and white photography is to be able to make an image whereby the use of that tonal range brings an emotion out - there's something about the use of tone rather than colour.

“I think black and white is the emotion of photography whereas colour is more the content.”
