Any time a game developer makes the decision to reboot a series, they run a serious risk of the new title falling flat and failing to capture a new audience.
That risk is even more pronounced when it comes to classic titles from more than a decade ago.
Enter Insomniac Games, who launched the original Ratchet & Clank way back in 2002 on the PlayStation 2.
Fourteen years later – and to conveniently coincide with the release of the animated movie of the same name, Ratchet & Clank the reboot hits the shelves.
Insomniac Games (Sunset Overdrive and the Resistance series on PS3) certainly pulled out all the stops with the R&C reboot.
Stunning graphics, incredibly detailed environments and cartoon-quality character modelling makes this game a true stand-out in the platformer genre.
It’s a true visual extravaganza, coupled with an exquisite game engine and compelling single player campaign that will take you the best part of 12-16 hours to trawl through depending on how much of each map you spend time exploring.
The highlight of the gameplay is the combat systems – specifically the incredible array of weapons on offer.
A lot of time, detail and imagination have gone into Ratchet’s arsenal, which includes all the old weapons from the original title, as well as some new ones.
The game also includes the ability to upgrade all the weapons and add to their functions through an upgrade tree.
These added functions greatly expand the way you can play through the campaign as you experiment with different weapons variations to find better ways of beating your enemies.
Ratchet and his wonderful little robotic sidekick Clank are a great team and will provide you plenty of reasons to not only pick up the controller and start playing – but keep coming back for more.
The stunning graphics and equalling impressive characterisations make it one of the most enjoyable and exciting games of the year for gamers of all ages.
