The state-of-the-art Cormiston Road complex is currently set to feature 75 rooms, although council will consider a proposal for an additional 15 rooms at its meeting this month.

Cr Holmdahl said the Prime Design Tasmania project was a significant development for the West Tamar.

“Council very much welcomes this development in the municipality, I think it’s a good boost to the building industry in the North which is a little bit in the doldrums in the moment, so from that point of view we welcome it very much,” Cr Holmdahl said.

“But it’s also a significant development in the municipality that’s going to provide a much needed facility.”

The project has drawn some criticism from the community, with council addressing 38 representations from residents at its April meeting.

The majority of representations addressed by council involved concerns about increased traffic in Stanton Drive and the size of the complex in comparison to the nearby Cadorna age care facility.

Cr Holmdahl said while the original proposal had drawn criticism, the recent proposal to extend the facility by 15 rooms had proved less contentious.

“There was some concern from the outset from immediate residents in the area and they came to council and council has facilitated community consultation between the developer and the community.

“The developer has been very responsive to criticism and certainly whenever we’ve had criticism from the community about the level of noise or dust or general building activity they have responded appropriately to those concerns.”

Cr Holmdahl said it was unlikely the area would be overrun with activity and expected the new facility would enjoy a seamless introduction to the community  

“A nursing home by 4pm in the afternoon is a very quiet place.

“On the whole, they are very quiet operations in a community and they don’t disrupt the community at all.”
