The government committed to funding 85 extra Transition to Practice nursing positions over four years at the last state election. The funding is equal to 15 additional nurses in 2016, five of whom are in the North.
This year marks the first that enrolled nurses have been included in the program and that participating nurses will be posted to St Marys Community Health Centre and Flinders Island Multi-Purpose Centre.
THS North executive director of nursing Helen Bryan said the aim of the funding was to expose new nurses to non-traditional settings.
Enrolled nurse Laura Saltmarsh will start work at St Marys on Monday. “I’m nervous but excited to go to St Marys. I’ve never lived in a rural community,” she said.
