More than 100 people turned out for a Bangers and Mash and Monster Auction night at the Scottsdale Football Club on Friday, where organisers collected more than $1300 in cash donations for the cause.

Councillor Leon Quilliam said he had been overwhelmed by the generosity of the community.

“I didn't expect it to go that well,” Cr Quilliam said.

“I was hoping for around about the $6000 mark so it exceeded all expectations. Aminya is near and dear to the hearts of a lot of people, that's why they give so generously.”

Aminya has been without a bus since facility ownership passed from Presbyterian Care to NE Care late last year, leaving residents without the means to travel into the community.

While the target of between $70,000 and $80,000 is still a fair way off, Cr Quilliam said the success of the fundraiser was a strong show of intent to get the bus back on the road. 

“We still need about another $60,000 or $70,000 to get the bus up and running so there's still a lot of work to be done but we're working at it.

“Now that we seem to be able to do so much for ourselves, we may be able to go to the government and say "we've raised this much, how about putting your hand in your pocket now?” and see if we can get some more put towards it.”

Cr Quilliam also passed on his gratitude to Aminya’s Joy Cox and the Country Women's Association's Glenda Mountney for their efforts in organising the event.

“Scottsdale Football Club committee; they opened their clubroom for the night free of charge, Nick Towns who’s a local auctioneer, he came along and gave his services for nothing for the night to do the auctioneering.

“Then there were three farmers in the area that donated sheep to be killed and sold and the Scottsdale Lions Club barbequed all the sausages so it was a joint effort by the whole community.”
