And no, perhaps not even traditional disciplines like boxing. But then again, maybe it is fitting that both Rousey and McGregor are no longer UFC world champions in their respective weight divisions – just as UFC 2 from EA Sports is far from the king of the sporting games.
There’s a lot to like about UFC 2. The characters themselves look extremely realistic, particularly the well-recognisable ones, while the background graphics look extremely polished.
That’s about all one can say about the game graphically, unfortunately. Lower than expected frame rates (below the anticipated 60 fps) makes combat difficult at times when you’re trying to achieve a move that requires finesse.
Not that there’s a great deal of finesse required in UFC. Of course, the name of the game here is brutality – beating your opponent senseless by punching, kicking and/or wrestling them to the point of submission.
The striking aspects of the game have been refined, with a new system added to the gameplay EA calls its new “knockout physics system”. The major change, however, for the combat side of the game is the inclusion of an on-screen prompt for players when they’re on the ground grappling with their opponent.
The prompt basically tells you what move would be most effective and how to perform it while you’re spread-eagle on the mat.
There has been a revamp of the game modes available, including the ability to take a fighter through the full career mode, as well as a new mode, UFC Ultimate Team, which pretty much mirrors the ultimate team mode found in the FIFA franchise. Unfortunately, it fails to deliver any great depth to the game itself.
Overall, UFC 2 is a mildly entertaining fighting game that really could be a lot better than it is given EA’s pedigree in producing top quality sports titles.
