International consultancy company Aurecon released a 20-year Swansea structure plan earlier this year, recommending council begin planning for an 18-hole world-class golf course and sporting oval in the town's north.

Initial consultation in December 2014 revealed community support for the relocation, although some concerns were tabled about the implications of the move. 

Cr Kent said there was still plenty of water to flow under the bridge before such a development could take place.

“These are things that we as council could be working on at some stage into the future,” Cr Kent said. 

“There's no development application to do a golf course but that could change in five minutes or twelve months or whatever the case may be.”

Tasmania’s popularity as a golf destination has skyrocketed in recent years, with King Island’s Cape Wickham and Barnbougle’s Dunes and Lost Farm attracting national and international acclaim. 

The state was also named Undiscovered Golf Destination of the Year in 2015 by an industry group comprising more than 200 of the world's leading golf journalists.

Cr Kent said while a world-class golfing facility at Swansea was still a pipedream, there was no doubt such an attraction would prove a tourist magnet.

“I think Tasmania in general is becoming a golf mecca from Australia's perspective.

“We've got a couple of courses being built in King Island and there's a bit of movement in South Arm with another course there and so it goes on.”

Cr Kent said he expected public courses such as the proposed Swansea facility would become increasingly viable as the trend away from membership courses continued.

“Golfers by and large are fanatical, they like to play on the best courses on the world and they travel.

“Barnbougle is an example; these people fly in and fly out from the mainland and they're there for the weekend – you try to get into Barnbougle on a weekend and you'd be doing well because it's booked out.”
