Mr Hodgman made the comment in Parliament on Tuesday afternoon after delivering a speech about positive tourism figures.
Mr Green made a comment about Mr Hodgman only delivering good news, to which he replied ''go and slit your wrists, mate''.
Mr Hodgman said it was a ''silly comment'' and he had apologised for it.
''In the heat of the moment these things occur,'' Mr Hodgman said.
''It's not appropriate and I apologised for it.
''The usual rough and tumble of Parliament often causes all members of the place to say things they perhaps shouldn't and this is one such occasion,'' he said.
Mr Green said he accepted the Premier's apology, but said he was shocked by the comment.
''It just goes to show what's bubbling underneath,'' Mr Green said
''He tries to make out he's a nice bloke but when it comes to the crunch he gets very personal,'' he said.
The comment comes just four days after the government launched a suicide prevention strategy.
