Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment wildlife ranger Matt Jones captured the stray seal, and estimated it weighed more than 200 kilograms.
Mr Jones said the seal probably made its way to the carpark overnight, and DPIPWE received a call from a member of the public about 7am.
Wildlife rangers and Tasmania Police were on the scene about 10am.
Mr Jones was also called in when a seal made its way to Ravenswood in January.
He said the seal discovered at Kmart was in ‘‘pretty good condition’’ compared to other seals he’s captured.
‘‘I think he just came up the Tamar estuary chasing some native fish and just got himself a little disorientated,’’ Mr Jones said.
