When the Crocs led 97-82 with less than seven minutes on the clock, it looked like the home side would coast to victory. But the Kings went on a 22-7 run to tie the scores heading into the dying stages.

Townsville again edged ahead but Sydney import Marcus Thornton nailed a three-pointer with 0.7 seconds left to make it 109 apiece.

Crocs import Omar Samhan tried to win it in regulation on the last play but was controversially blocked by Kings centre Angus Brandt.

The Kings started slowly in the extra period but star import Josh Childress hit a couple of miraculous threes to drag the visitors back into the contest and they trailed by three points after free throws by Nick Kay and Samhan.

Sydney guard Jason Cadee had a Hail Mary three on the buzzer to send it into a second overtime period but it rimmed out to give Townsville a nail-biting win, which was the highest-scoring NBL game since December, 2008.

​"This team doesn't need a lot to take the next step and the review process will identify the areas that need to be done," Townsville coach Shawn Dennis said.

"You watch the evolution of the group over the year and we have gotten better and better and better, particularly in our last half a dozen games. It's a fitting victory."

Samhan finished with 25 points and 13 rebounds) while Clint Steindl scored the same total on 8/15 shooting while Cadee led all scorers with 32 points and added seven assists) while Childress (31 points, 12 rebounds and five assists) was typically efficient in what may be the former NBA star's final match in the NBL.

Townsville led 26-22 after the first quarter, the Kings fought back to lock it up at 50-50 at half-time but the result appeared a foregone conclusion when the Crocs took an 89-75 lead into three-quarter-time.

The Crocs finished the season in seventh spot at 11-17 while the Kings collected the wooden spoon with a 6-21 record, their worst in franchise history.
