That is the scenario that Alex Doolan finds himself in after the former Test No.3 was omitted from Tasmania’s Shield outfit to face Queensland at the Gabba from Sunday.

Doolan managed just 12 and 20 in the Tigers’ loss to Victoria, and has made way with George Bailey returning from Australian duties.

The 30-year-old from Launceston has scored just 251 runs at 25.10 (with two 50s) this season against the red ball, on the back of 355 at 20.08 (two 50s) the previous summer after being left out of the Test team.

‘‘We would have loved him to have put a bit more pressure on us, in regards to a big score in that [game], and make our decisions as selectors a bit harder for this one, but unfortunately he didn’t,’’ Tasmania coach Dan Marsh said on Thursday.

‘‘It is just the lack of runs with Dools.

‘‘As a top-order batsman you’ve got to be making runs, and as a senior player he needs to start doing that.

‘‘Everyone has got to perform –  there’s no doubt about that.’’

Bailey himself will be looking back to the form that saw him score 543 Shield runs at 60.33.

The 33-year-old averaged 12.6 in his last six ODIs, after scores of 112 and 76 not out in the first two matches against India.

Ironically, Doolan’s latest omission  came on the same day that Jackson Bird won a Test recall.

Doolan was the last Tasmanian player to don the baggy green, back in 2014.

All-rounder Evan Gulbis returns, with uncapped paceman Cameron Wheatley named, with Bird in New Zealand, for the last-placed Tigers.

Tom Triffitt has again kept Tim Paine out of the team, with Marsh keen to give the Smithton wicketkeeper another opportunity.

Ulverstone’s Ben Hilfenhaus is still struggling with his hamstring issues.

The clash with Queensland will be a day-night affair with the use of the pink Kookaburra.

Marsh also defended his father, Australian selector Rod, after criticism in recent times, saying selectors ‘‘get the majority’’ of decisions right.
