Store manager John Baker said the supermarket would employ about 90 people, with the store providing half of its employees with their first job.
The store, located on the corner of York and Wellington streets, has elevator and travelator access.
Woolworths state operations manager Mark Stanley said the store would place an emphasis on stocking fresh, local produce.
Mr Stanley said the 4220 square-metre Woolworths was tailored to an ‘‘inner city demographic’’.
The supermarket cost more than $20 million to develop and planning began about three years ago.
The supermarket features Woolworths’ first Tasmanian in-store cafe, an impressive deli where shoppers can have produce freshly sliced or ‘‘grab and go’’, and a full production meat department and bakery.
The complex has 165 car parks, most of which are undercover.
Nineteen checkouts, including self-serve, express and traditional, will be available to customers.
The Woolworths will trade between 7am and 11pm daily.
There will be a VIP opening on Tuesday, February 16, with two hours trading, which all members of the public are welcome to attend.
