Centre co-ordinator Shirlene Oakley said the children had been wanting to have their own garden for some time.
"The plan is to grow vegetables to help the needy and flowers for people in Ainslie [House] or in hospital to cheer them up," Ms Oakley said.
The vegetables will also be used for the centre's cooking days, to make healthy lunches.
"We have a group of children who are willing to meet once a week to maintain our gardens - this will be a great opportunity for our children to learn about where their food comes from," Ms Oakley said.
With help from a local family who delivered 10 bags of manure from their farm, Bunnings in Kings Meadows — who were quick to donate two garden beds, plants and mulch — and from the George Town Council who contributed soil, the community garden project is nearing completion.
"Kim from Bunnings and the children all worked hard shovelling dirt emptying the bags of sheep poo planting and watering," Ms Oakley said.
"We are very excited that what we wanted to do is finally being done," Ms Oakley said.
