Caltex St Marys owner Grant Faulkner said the floods were the biggest he had seen in 45 years of his family owning the business.
"Bits of road have been swept away and there's lots of debris, lots of wood. People's wood heaps have ended up somewhere across the other side of town," he said.
"We had probably the worst lightning and thunder that I can recall. That started about 3 o'clock and was still going on at 8 o'clock this morning."
Mr Faulkner said a number of houses had been "inundated" with water, while the town's supermarket and bakery had both been flooded.
"I've come out of it not too bad. I've managed to lift up a lot of stuff out of the way in time, so we haven't lost all that much equipment.
"But I believe the bakery has lost all the important stuff, mixers and ovens and stuff like that. They've had about three foot of water down there."
The golf course, recreation ground and camping grounds have also been hit hard by the heavy rain, with a number of campervans being forced to find higher ground.
Mr Faulkner said he would wait for his shop to dry out before attempting to clean up the mess.
"We'll survive and get through it all. We've done it all before."
