TASMANIA'S own East Coast brats Luca Brasi are hitting the road to catch the summer sights and celebrate the upcoming release of their new album. The Aeroplane single dropped in November, and the tour of the same name will visit Launceston on Australia Day Eve. X-Static sat down with lead singer Tyler Richardson to find out more.
Well done on the new album. It seems way more polished and melodic - can you talk me through the process you've gone through for this record?

We thought with this album especially that this has got to be the one that we pull out all the stops and be as honest as possible. With the melody thing it's always the way that Tom [Busby] plays guitar - it's always been a factor we want to keep.
But we wanted to combine that and find the right balance - it was something we kind of struggled with the last time. It's actually turned out to be a hell of a lot more work and a lot harder than we thought - but hopefully that's a balance we needed to find.
Is it ironic then that in being more honest the album actually came across as being less reckless?
Well I always try to be as honest as possible but this time I just thought it doesn't matter any more - I don't want to care what anyone else thinks and I want to write a record that is really personal and that I believe in and go as far as we can with being really honest.
So has the way you've gone about writing changed now you know your voice has more reach and people are going to be screaming lyrics back at you when you're on stage?
To be honest it hasn't really changed at all. I've never sat down and wrote a set of concise lyrics, it's always just fragments and then finding a coherent theme and writing towards that and them somehow I end up writing about something I maybe never meant to. It's actually really bizarre.
For some reason I always expect to hear something political from you guys, but you've stayed away from delving into that. Is that a conscious thing?
I totally know what you mean with the way that we are and who we are as people. But as the person that writes the songs I never feel like I know enough or am versed enough in the issues I believe in to say something that I can explain and then back up properly.
I've thought about this a bunch. I really wish I could write a protest song. I could probably say things in a conversation that I can't say in a song and I don't know why.
What's the biggest thing you've learnt touring?
It sounds like the dumbest thing in the world but if you ever get the chance to drink water or eat food that's semi-decent, or a place to sleep, never ever ever turn it down. It's taken me a long time not just to go to the beer first.
Maybe that is just a reflection of the style in which you guys do tours?
Yeah totally, but how nice is it!
