The City of Launceston and Launceston LINC unveiled the exhibition of more than 100 portraits that were taken earlier this year in the city as a part of the national Racism. It Stops With Me campaign.
The project is an initiative of the Launceston Safer Communities Partnership and the Council’s Youth Advisory Group.
The campaign aims to not just raise awareness about racism but also facilitate people with the information they need to be proactive in stopping it.
Launceston community development and safety officer Nathalie Servant said the campaign was important because people might not necessarily know how to act if they encountered racism in the community.
‘‘People often feel like doing something but wonder what can they do when they know it’s not right, so this campaign has a lot of information attached,’’ Ms Servant.
Launceston Safer Communities Partnership chairman Danny Gibson said having people from a myriad places call Launceston home was a quality worthy of nurturing.
‘‘Our community is enhanced by the vibrancy and through the skills, knowledge, traditions and diversities that these people bring to the community,’’ he said.
