Ten months of fundraising and a successful aquatic challenge later, the Launceston family has reached its objective – seven times over.
The Malkins’ fundraising efforts culminated in the inaugural Phil’s Dive for a Cure event early last month, which saw about 200 take to Waubs Beach at Bicheno for a dive, paddle or swim challenge.
On Monday, the family presented a cheque for $35,000 to the Leukaemia Foundation, the largest Tasmanian community-based fundraiser in the organisation’s history.
Mrs Malkin said the foundation had been a great support to the family during her husband’s ordeal.
‘‘This is actually his final wish, it was a wish to raise some funds to give back to the Leukaemia Foundation for their support,’’ she said.
‘‘They haven’t left our side and we wouldn’t have been able to do this without them.’’
Mrs Malkin said she had been amazed by the response from the community.
‘‘It’s just really highlighted the Tasmanian community spirit, the rallying that’s come around us has been nothing short of remarkable,’’ she said.
Charlea agreed.
‘‘I just think it’s amazing and I know Dad would be really proud, he’d be jumping with joy he’d just be so happy,’’ she said.
‘‘It’s all he wanted and we’ve done it now so I hope he’s proud.’’
