The system will be a welcome upgrade for Riverside Olympic, who have had to play home games elsewhere over recent seasons when the pitch has become too waterlogged during winter months.

Olympic senior co-coach Todd Mitchell said the club was very excited with the prospect of having a pitch capable of withstanding both matches and training sessions on a regular basis.

"It's exactly what we want and what we need," he said.

"It'll allow us to train more regularly throughout the whole season, especially during the middle of winter and it'll give us more room because I think they're extending the overall surface area of our training ground.

"Once it's done it's going to be unbelievable and it should be one of the best grounds if not in the North, all the state."

West Tamar Council works manager Greg Ingham said the upgrade would greatly bolster the club's aspirations to host matches from the state's premier competition.

"We expect the final design to be finished December and for (the contractor) to complete the work by early in the new year," he said.

"The idea is to get the work done during the drier season, we must have it finished and playable by the start of the soccer season."

Mr Ingham said the instalment would further enhance the precinct's status as the premier sporting complex in the region.

"The Aussie rules ground is recognised as one of the best grounds in the north for footy, in no small part to a good drainage system, so the soccer ground is the last of the fields getting some attention to bring it up to a state league standard."
