A total of 33 teams, representing grades 7-8 and 9-10, from across the state battled it out for supremacy on the courts trying to make Sunday’s semi-finals and grand final match-ups.
In the senior boys’ competition (9-10), the two top teams in pool A were Riverside High and Marist Regional College who should both move through to semi-finals after being undefeated in qualifying rounds.
They were scheduled to play each other in the late night game on Saturday night.
Riverside, ranked No.1 in the North, had a close contest against Scotch Oakburn College, ranked three, with Riverside winning 46-44.
In the other pool, Newtown High, who were first ranked in the South, will move through to semi-finals after defeating McKillop College and St Patricks College.
A Saturday night match-up between St Patricks College and McKillop College was set to decide the other senior boys’ semi-finalist..
In senior girls’, Wynyard High, the No.1 ranked North-West team, won both of their games and were expected to qualify for semis, with a game to come against St Patricks last night.
St Marys College, ranked two in the South, looked likely to qualify and move through after defeating the No.1 ranked Northern team St Patricks.
Sacred Heart College, will go through as the No.1 ranked side in pool B and Marist Regional College the other semi-finalist.
In junior boys’, McKillop College, No.2 ranked in the South, defeated the North-West No.1 ranked St Brendan Shaw College by 18 points but both schools should qualify for semis.
Riverside High had a 2-1 record but had to play McKillop last night with the result of that game likely to decide the other semi-finalist.
Scotch Oakburn won both their games in the other pool as the second ranked Northern team and upset Queechy High who were ranked No.1, 34-30.
St Virgils and Queechy were scheduled to meet last night with that result to determine the other pool B semi-finalist.
In junior girls’, St Patricks College won both their games in pool A as did Ulverstone High who will move through to semis as the No.1 ranked Northern and North-West teams.
In the other pool semi-finalists were still up in the air. St Brendan Shaw College won both of their games but had to play Rose Bay High last night.
Riverside High and Marist Regional College were all in the mix and final results would be needed to split those schools to decide who moved through to Sunday’s finals.
