IN A matter of weeks Launceston’s City Park will be transformed into an interactive Christmas extravaganza illuminated by a sea of candles.
However, the excitement for this year’s Carols by Candlelight must be contained for longer than before, with the event being held a week later than usual.
Carols chairman Danny Gibson said hosting the event closer to Christmas allowed a more ideal time for people to come together as a family and participate in a meaningful community event.
‘‘Last year we were able to contribute $20,000 to The Examiner Empty Stocking Appeal and we would love to be able to match that,’’ Mr Gibson said.
‘‘It’s that time that as a community we embrace the festive season together and help those less fortunate,’’ he said.
This year’s entertainment will feature more than 40 Christmas songs, including sing-along carols and an all-local line-up of new and existing talent.
‘‘We have a really strong art scene and we’re really fortunate that everyone enters into the spirit and gives up their time,’’ Mr Gibson said, adding that a call had been made and Santa was en route.
This year’s event is presented by the Rotary Club of Tamar Sunrise with generous support of ONE Agency Launceston and Vos Constructions.
The 107th The Examiner Empty Stocking Appeal raises funds for the Launceston Benevolent Society, Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul and City Mission.
Donations can be made at The Examiner’s offices in Launceston, Devonport and Hobart, with collection tins available at businesses in Launceston.
