But on November 25, 1950, sisters Lenna Davis and Alice Nichols literally shared the aisle as they married their sweethearts at St John’s Church in Launceston.
On Wednesday, the quartet celebrated their 65th wedding anniversaries with family at Summerhill, and one gets the feeling the four have never been closer.
Mrs Nichols’ husband, Rex, said both his marriage and the friendship of the Davises had been blissful relationships.
‘‘We’ve always been mates ever since we got married and before and we still are – and that’s a good 65 years,’’ he said.
‘‘We’ve had enjoyment all that time.
‘‘Together we’ve always been friends for all those years and we hope there’ll be a lot more.’’
Mr Nichols and Maurie Davis met in 1948 through the Tech Old Boys football club, where they struck up a firm friendship.
Later that year, Mr Davis met his future wife for the first time when the four attended Carols by Candlelight together in City Park.
These days, the two ex-footballers catch up for a round of golf twice a week, or ‘‘three sometimes’’ if there’s time.
All four agreed the key to making a marriage work was not walking out when things got tough.
‘‘I think it’s got to be give and take in any partnership – you just can’t walk away if anything goes wrong,’’ Mrs Davis said.
