Lymphomas are cancers that affect the lymphatic system, over time weakening the body’s ability to fight infection.
Zack was diagnosed just three weeks ago and is now in The Royal Melbourne Children’s Hospital undergoing a lengthy treatment program.
To assist with his recovery Riverside High School is holding a fundraiser.
Principal Greg Morgan said the reaction had been phenomenal.
‘‘For Zack to be so suddenly diagnosed, I think it really brought it home that this can happen to anybody so there was an enormous rally of empathy, care and support,’’ Mr Morgan said.
In 16 hours the school’s Facebook post attracted 31,800 hits and has been inundated with well wishers.
Liz Gibson is a teacher of Zack’s and attributed the overwhelming community response to his superb personality.
‘‘He’s such a great kid, everyone can’t speak highly enough of him ... we’re just blessed to have him in our world,’’ Ms Gibson said.
For fundraiser tickets or a raffle book to sell, contact the school office on 63276333.
The raffle will be drawn on December 11 with more than 23 prizes up for grabs.
