The bus has been operating since 2009, and was originally implemented as part of a park-and-ride scheme from the council.

The service has since been grown and now transports people across an extended timetable in the city.The role of the bus could be further increased, and used to battle traffic congestion, if the city becomes inundated with vehicle movements attached to any future inner city campus development, according to council general manager Robert Dobrzynski.

‘‘Since its inception, the free Tiger Bus has transported 343,089 passengers,’’ Mr Dobrzynski said.

‘‘Should the University of Tasmania’s proposed Northern campus proposal proceed, the free Tiger Bus could obviously become and important transportational link between the CBD and Inveresk.

''He said, should there be a need, there was a hypothetical potential to add another vehicle to the service.

''The council is always open to improving its services to better suit people’s needs,’’ Mr Dobrzynski said.
