The Meander Valley Council approved the heritage design for the pavilion upgrade project during its October meeting, allocating a further $636,781 in funding for the building works, bringing the total allocated funding to just over $1 million.
Meander Valley Mayor Craig Perkins said the meeting was about ensuring the community could get the maximum amount of utilisation out of the facility.
"It's to get the users together to consider the planning for how that facility can provide the best use for the Westbury community," he said.
"We're continuing to engage community groups on how that might look and what other opportunities maybe need to be considered with that development."
Cr Perkins said the initial investment would be to improve the facilities at the grounds for current users, but that there would also be a focus on ensuring the facility remained suitable for longer-term use.
A report published by Meander Valley councillor Bob Richardson said it was about 40 years since significant infrastructure spending had occurred in Westbury.
In the report, Cr Richardson said in that time the populations of Westbury and Hagley had continued to grow.
"Compared with similarly-sized population centres in Tasmania, Westbury/Hagley is significantly under-serviced," the report said.
"However, that is changing! A significant start has been made. Stage 1 of the Westbury Recreation Precinct has begun."
Cr Richardson's report lists three stages for the upgrades; the change rooms, the community sports and function centre, and the development of the remainder of the precinct.
Cr Perkins said anyone in the Westbury area with an interest in the development was invited to attend the community meeting.
It will be held on November 26 at the Westbury Town Hall from 5.15pm. More information is available from the Meander Valley Council website.
